2011-09-22 · The first art history paper I ever wrote in college was on Fragonard’s The Swing (shown above). I remember writing about the Rococo style and the rise of the French aristocracy in the 18th century. I also remember discussing how this scene represents a young woman who is being pushed on a swing by an older man (shown in the background on the right).

This oil painting known as The Swing was created by the French artist Jean-Honoré Fragonard sometime during 1767 and 1768. A gentleman of the court reportedly requested the painter represent his mistress being pushed on a swing as he secretly admired her from below.
The Swing is the most famous painting from the career of French Rococo artist, Jean-Honore Fragonard, and resides in the prestigious London art gallery of the Wallace Collection. The Swing is better known as Les Hasards Heureux de l'Escarpolette in Fragonard's native France but this beautiful oil painting has become much loved all over the world, so most know it as The Swing. The Swing (L'Escarpolette), originally known as Lucky Happenings on the Swing (Les Hasards heureux de l'escarpolette), is Fragonard's best known work. It is believed to have been commissioned by the Baron de Saint-Julien, who wanted a picture of his mistress on a swing being pushed by a bishop, whilst he (the Baron) was so positioned as to be able to see up her the girl's skirt.
The eloquent dress is made with bright African wax prints ( that aren’t exactly African ) that’s branded with a fake Chanel logo. In 1756, Fragonard was sent to Italy as a pensioner of the crown; he remained at the French Academy in Rome until 1761. From the numerous black chalk copies he executed there, it is clear that he held masters of the Baroque in the highest esteem, copying works in Rome, Naples , and Venice .
